🧼 Foster Education Highlight: Cleaning & Disinfection 101

Keeping your foster space clean isn’t just about sparkle, it’s one of the most important ways to keep both your fosters and your own pets healthy and happy!

🧽 Key Tips:

  • Clean before you disinfect.Ā Soap and water remove debris while disinfectant kills germs. You can’t disinfect a dirty surface!

  • Pick easy-to-clean areas.Ā Tile, vinyl, bathrooms, and stainless-steel bowls = your best friends. Try to avoid carpet, fabric, and wood, especially for new or sick fosters.

🧓 How Often Should You Disinfect?

  • 🐶 Between foster pets — always!

  • 🦠 DailyĀ if anyone’s sick

  • 😺 WeeklyĀ if everyone’s healthy

  • šŸ’© ImmediatelyĀ for any messes (vomit, diarrhea, etc.)

🧯 What to Use:

  • Diluted bleachĀ works great (see below).

  • Or grab some Rescue — what we use at the adoption center! Bring a container, and we’ll happily share some with you. šŸ’š

Bleach Dilutions:

  • 1:32 for most illnesses (ā…“ cup bleach per gallon water)

  • 1:10 for ringworm (1 cup bleach per gallon water)

šŸ’” Let any disinfectant sit wet for 10 full minutesĀ before rinsing!

🧺 Laundry:

Wash foster laundry separately in hot water with detergent and bleach. Sun-dry anything you can’t toss in the dryer. Sunshine is nature’s disinfectant! ā˜€ļø

🚫 For Tough Germs (parvo, panleuk, ringworm):

  • Throw away anything that can’t be fully cleaned.

  • Avoid shaking bedding or litter (it spreads spores).

  • Change A/C filters after ringworm cases.

  • Wait a year before bringing in unvaccinated kittens or puppiesĀ after a parvo/panleuk case.

🧤 Quick Tips:

  • Wear gloves and wash hands often.

  • Don’t mix clean and dirty surfaces.

  • Use disposable litter boxes or covers for easy cleanup.
